My final project for RISD Winter 2025 Experiments in Stop-motion class. My goal was to explore the movement of flowers/plants blooming and closing, something I had explored briefly with a previous homework using found objects.

Final Film

Filmed using DSLR camera, 24fps but shooting on twos

Process

I used flowers at several different stages of growth and replaced them every frame to simulate the movement of growing.

Setup

I used a 10x10x10 inch cardboard set, inspired by liminal pools. The tiles were created by painting the whole set various shades of green and taping out the lines between each tile and painting over with acrylic paint. I also experimented with using a thin layer of plaster and carving out tiles, but the moisture warped the cardboard base too much to really use.

Locked Motion Project

This homework project inspired my final film. I took pictures of 18th-century scientific prints from a library book. Shot with an iPhone.
