Graphic Design
Book Cover
A book cover design (front, back, and spine) for one of my favorite childhood books, Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin. The cover art style is inspired by Chinese ink paintings and calligraphy and heavily contrasts the mountain and the moon symbols of the book. The publication, logo, and barcode details are all hypothetical designs. *Note: The Chinese title is one I translated myself, so it is not an official title or even necessarily completely accurate.
2023-2024 MV Speech Hoodie
A hoodie design for my speech team, the Monta Vista Speech Team. The design mimicks a vintage comic book, with halftones and various panels, that depicts things we do in speech, from dressing in formal attire and winning trophies to getting food and playing games together between rounds. As our VP of PR, I handled designing, getting feedback, production, and distribution of the merch. In total, we sold over 50 hoodies and had a large margin of profit to be put back into the team's needs.
Typography Mural
A riff on the traditional idea of a typography poster, expanding the canvas from a single poster to fit on a building wall
Fairytale Character Design
Two character designs of the protagonist and antagonist of the Snow Queen fairytale. The villain design, the titular Snow Queen, embodies the rigid perfection of snowflakes and ice, and the flowiness of icy wind. In contrast, the protagonist, the little boy Kai, has a warm color palette, as well as asymmetric body proportions and clothing to emphasize his humanity in comparison to the ethereal snow queen.
Personal Monogram
A monogram and motion graphic based on my Chinese name, inspired by Chinese paper cutting crafts and seal stamps
Business Card
A business card for a hypothetical personal business. The layered paper look and silhouettes of various crafting supplies like pencils, brushes, glue, scissors, and paint reflect the crafting service provided.
Animal Character Design
A character design project, with several potential designs of the same animal (in this case, a leopard gecko) and a final rendering.
Grill + Grind
Business card, menu, and takeout box design for an imaginary cafe, Grill & Grind. The design was inspired by pop-art and Japanese manga, in line with the Japanese dishes served by the cafe.
Paper Doll Me
A template for creating a paper doll (designed as my ideal self, with clothing and styles I would wear), inspired by magical girl animes.
Doll Playing Cards
Poker face card designs inspired by voodoo dolls and their creepy connotations. The King of Hearts is known as the "Suicide King", while the Queen of Hearts and Knave of Hearts are associated with beheading and stealing, respectively, from "Alice in Wonderland". Hence, the King is literally stabbing himself in the head, the Queen's head is ripping off, and the Jack has lost his hands, all in reference to these iconic creepy characterizations.
Monument Valley
A hypothetical design of a level of the game Monument Valley. The design follows the geometric style of Monument Valley, incorporating optical illusions and M.C. Escher inspired layouts.
Golf Courses
Mini golf courses inspired by the work of artist Marc David Spengler
