Design
Artworks that maintain some type of real-world function: posters, book covers, characters, merchandise, etc..

2 Designer Timeline
A pamphlet that displays the lives and achievements of two graphic designers, Milton Glaser and Tomoko Miho, in comparison with each other and world events. The timeline has a relatively minimalistic style in reference to Miho's work, but has stripes/sections of color in reference to Glaser's work. The 3-D folding style of the pamphlet also imitates the architectural quality of Miho's designs. *Note: the physical mockup has a printing mistake in the title section, currently in the process of editing and reprinting.

Campaign Project
This project was part of an assignment for my Design Studio 1 class, for which I created a campaign encouraging people to build their media literacy. The campaign includes a fake milk carton, meant to be able to be easily mistaken for a real milk carton. The intention was for it to be able to be placed among any normal milk cartons and be casually picked up by everyday consumers. There is a QR code on the milk carton that leads to a website with further resources about media literacy.
My campaign was aimed at mostly those who have fundamentally altruistic intentions but buy into misinformation (especially in conservative circles) and harm people through their misinformed behavior; however, the message is relevant to any audience in general.
The campaign encourages people to ask questions; most people get defensive and double down on their beliefs when directly challenged, so the campaign's intention is to give people agency to break out of their echo chambers. There are no direct statements against any beliefs, but rather resources to develop media literacy–a way to form an opinion separate from polarizing influences.
The analog format is inspired by 1950s food advertising and packaging, appealing to a very traditional sense of American identity from a very traditional era. The format of a milk carton flies under the radar, so it encourages the audience to quite literally take a close look at what they consume. The digital format, the website, supplements the questioning process started by the info on the milk carton by providing media literacy resources, while also maintaining a vintage look.

Siddhartha
A mockup layout for the first two chapters of the novel Siddhartha by Herman Hesse. The cover was inspired by the Buddhist themes of the book.

Type Poster
A poster promoting the typeface Mendl Sans

Connections Poster
A poster centered around a major landmark in graphic design history (in this case, the Wendingen magazine) that draws a connecting theme with other pieces of design: two from before the landmark and two from after the landmark. I decided to focus on typographic covers of art and design magazines, specifically on Ver Sacrum, Graphische Revue, Graphis, and IdN.

Visual Systems Posters
A continuation of the object posters, expanding them into a series or posters with a shared visual system.

Type and Image
An accordion book displaying 10 different photos, with type overlapping and interacting with the photos to create a dialogue between forms. I specifically chose paper as a theme to play with transparency and layering. Photos were taken with a Sony a6100 mirrorless camera.

Object Poster
A series of posters based on a randomly assigned object (in this case, an ice cube). The posters began with various experiments with graphic language and expressive type. Based on the various elements created in those experiments, an initial six poster designs were created, then further refined into a final object poster. Photos taken with Sony RX100 VII.

Modular Type
A modular typeface made using three modular shapes. The forms were inspired by stars and calligraphy, and based on an initial grid of circles, ovals, and squares.

Book Cover
A book cover design (front, back, and spine) for one of my favorite childhood books, Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin. The cover art style is inspired by Chinese ink paintings and calligraphy and heavily contrasts the mountain and the moon symbols of the book. The publication, logo, and barcode details are all hypothetical designs. *Note: The Chinese title is one I translated myself, so it is not an official title or even necessarily completely accurate.

2023-2024 MV Speech Hoodie
A hoodie design for my speech team, the Monta Vista Speech Team. The design mimicks a vintage comic book, with halftones and various panels, that depicts things we do in speech, from dressing in formal attire and winning trophies to getting food and playing games together between rounds. As our VP of PR, I handled designing, getting feedback, production, and distribution of the merch. In total, we sold over 50 hoodies and had a large margin of profit to be put back into the team's needs.

Personal Monogram
A monogram and motion graphic based on my Chinese name, inspired by Chinese paper cutting crafts and seal stamps

Grill + Grind
Business card, menu, and takeout box design for an imaginary cafe, Grill & Grind. The design was inspired by pop-art and Japanese manga, in line with the Japanese dishes served by the cafe.

Monument Valley
A hypothetical design of a level of the game Monument Valley. The design follows the geometric style of Monument Valley, incorporating optical illusions and M.C. Escher inspired layouts.

Doll Playing Cards
Poker face card designs inspired by voodoo dolls and their creepy connotations. The King of Hearts is known as the "Suicide King", while the Queen of Hearts and Knave of Hearts are associated with beheading and stealing, respectively, from "Alice in Wonderland". Hence, the King is literally stabbing himself in the head, the Queen's head is ripping off, and the Jack has lost his hands, all in reference to these iconic creepy characterizations.
